Health and Wellness

By Emily Awe Griffin

I think we can all agree that now more than ever our health and wellness should be a major focus in our lives. And sometimes that can be easier said than done. When it comes to work life or school life balance, sometimes our own health and wellness can sit on the backburner.

Stress can be one of the biggest factors in all of this. From trying to study for higher education, building a career or caring for your family, stress can take over all situations.

But there are some small ways to incorporate selfcare in your life to reduce stress, which can lead to better overall health as well.

- Make time during the week to do an activity you enjoy
- Go for a walk daily, even if it only 15 minutes
- Take breaks from social media
- Use your time off at work! Everyone needs to take breaks
- Reduce screen time before bed, you will sleep better!
- Talk to your friends and family
- Meditate
- Mental health awareness

Next up are other things you can do for your health. Of course, it is always important to speak with a medical professional for any major health concerns. Caring for your immune system should be a focus in all our lives and there are so many ways to do it!

- Prioritize eating more fruits and vegetables
- Focus on eating whole foods, avoid the inner aisles of the grocery store as much as possible
- Getting more sunlight daily- the best way to get your Vitamin D
- Drinking more water
- Doing some form of exercise, whatever you enjoy
- Take Vitamin C Daily

During the winter months health can especially be a challenge due to cold and flu season and not being able to get outside as much, depending on where you live. We spend the majority of our time indoors and in most cases the air in our homes or other places can be more polluted than the air outside. Some things to help with that can be:

- Avoid using products with fragrance- air fresheners, candles, scented anything really. Fragrance is the new second hand smoke, filled with toxins that can disrupt your Endocrine system ( Non Toxic alternative Grow Fragrance)
- Invest in a good air filter/purifier system to help with indoor allergens
- Open your windows to let in some fresh air, even if it can only be for a short period of time

I am extremely passionate about health and wellness and have made it one of my goals to encourage the people in my life to really take charge of their health and wellness as well. It is important to me to not only see people flourish in their academic, career or family goals in life, but to do it in the right wellness mind set.
